La Mesa 91942 Neighborhood Guide: History, Food and Things to Do

by Trevor Landress

La Mesa has a mall that opened in the early 1960s, a Village with historic buildings, and a long list of restaurants. This guide covers the history, the places locals mention, and a short real estate section on ZIP 91942 at the end.

The short answer

  • The Village has a depot from 1894 and a lemon company building from 1895.
  • Grossmont Center opened in 1961 and was the third regional mall in San Diego County.
  • The Census Bureau lists La Mesa's population at 59,914, with 47.7% of homes owner-occupied.
  • Redfin's median sale price for ZIP 91942 was $769,826 in June 2026.

A short history of the Village

The Journal of San Diego History says the flume arrived in 1886, which brought water to the area and helped make farming possible. It also notes that Grable's purchase happened in 1906 and that the Dorothy Hotel was built in 1907. In other words, the town was putting down roots well before it became a city.

The San Diego Architectural Foundation highlights several buildings from that era. The La Mesa Lemon Company Building at 8247 La Mesa Boulevard is dated 1895. The La Mesa Depot at 4695 Nebo Drive is from 1894. The La Mesa Drug Store Building is from 1921. And the McKinney House is Historical Landmark No. 1. Por Favor, the Mexican restaurant, has been in the Historic Bank Building since 1974.

Parks and places to wander

  • Porter Hall and MacArthur Park are both on the Architectural Foundation's list of places worth knowing in La Mesa.
  • Legacy Park Lookout was added in 2016.
  • Walkway of the Stars dates to 2003.
  • Briercrest Park covers 4.2 acres.
  • Secret Stairs at Windsor and Canterbury is one of those local finds people like to show visitors.

Grossmont Center

Grossmont Center opened in 1961 and was the third regional mall in San Diego County, according to the Architectural Foundation. East County Magazine's restaurant story mentions Casa de Pico and Hooley's Irish Pub and Grill at Grossmont Center, plus national chains there. That article is from June 2018, so I'd confirm what's still open.

A little real estate

Redfin reported a median sale price of $769,826 in ZIP 91942 for June 2026, down 6.1% from a year earlier. There were 81 homes sold and the typical home took about 21 days. The Census Bureau lists a median home value of $812,000 and a median gross rent of $2,049 for all of La Mesa. My La Mesa 91942 housing market post explains the sales data, and my La Mesa 91941 vs. 91942 comparison shows how the two ZIP codes differ. For the other La Mesa ZIP code, read my La Mesa 91941 neighborhood guide.

My advice for San Diego buyers

  1. Walk the Village on a weekend morning and again on a weeknight.
  2. If you're considering a condo, ask for the HOA budget and the reserve study.
  3. Look at recent sales within a few blocks, since a ZIP code median blends many kinds of homes.
  4. Check the age of the roof, sewer line and electrical panel on older homes.
