Point Loma 92106 Neighborhood Guide: History, Food and Things to Do

by Trevor Landress

Point Loma has one of the longest histories in San Diego, a working harbor on one side and surf on the other. This guide covers the landing site, the places locals send visitors, where to eat, and a short real estate section at the end.

The short answer

  • Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed at Point Loma on September 28, 1542.
  • The Old Point Loma Lighthouse opened in 1855.
  • Liberty Station is a former Naval Training Center with a food hall, an arts district and a nine-hole course.
  • Redfin's median sale price for ZIP 92106 was $1,729,202 in August 2026.

A short history of Point Loma

An SDSU Global Campus blog says Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed at Point Loma on September 28, 1542, the first European expedition to set foot on what later became the U.S. West Coast. San Diego Magazine's guide adds that the U.S. military later made its first foothold in San Diego here. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse opened in 1855 and still stands at Cabrillo National Monument.

Yokohama, Japan, gave San Diego a large bronze bell in 1958 to mark the sister-city relationship, and the Yokohama Friendship Bell stands at the end of Shelter Island. Then there's Liberty Station, the redeveloped Naval Training Center. It's a good example of how the peninsula keeps changing while the older military sites stay part of the map.

Where to spend a day

  • Cabrillo National Monument at 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive has viewpoints, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, hiking and tide pools.
  • Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a 68-acre park with sea views and tide pools, and San Diego Magazine notes gray whales pass from mid-December to April.
  • NTC Arts and Culture District at 2820 Roosevelt Road is a former Naval Training Center that now holds galleries, theaters and studios.
  • Shelter Island is a boating center with marinas, bayside parks and the Yokohama Friendship Bell.
  • Harbor Island has a shoreline path for walking and cycling, picnic grass and the July 4 fireworks.

If I were hosting a visitor, I'd do the lighthouse in the morning, lunch in Liberty Station and sunset at Sunset Cliffs. It's an easy day that shows you three sides of the peninsula.

Where locals eat

San Diego Magazine's Point Loma guide, published October 13, 2023, lists these:

  • Point Loma Seafoods at 2805 Emerson Street serves fried fish, sushi, tacos and shellfish cocktails. It arrived in San Diego in 1963.
  • Bali Hai at 2230 Shelter Island Drive opened in 1954 and has served more than 2.7 million mai tais.
  • Liberty Public Market at 2820 Historic Decatur Road is a food hall with more than 30 small eateries.
  • Jennings House Eatery at 1018 Rosecrans Street is a café in the oldest house in Point Loma.
  • Con Pane Rustic Breads and Cafe at 2750 Dewey Road bakes levain loaves in a stone hearth starting at 1 a.m.
  • Cesarina at 4161 Voltaire Street is an Italian restaurant where the pasta and pastries are made in view of diners.
  • Fathom Bistro, Bait, and Tackle at 1776 Shelter Island Drive serves craft beer and housemade sausages on a fishing pier.

The same guide lists Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, Supannee House of Thai, Harbor Town Pub and The Wine Pub if you want more options. Because the guide is from 2023, check hours before you go.

A little real estate

Redfin reported a median sale price of $1,729,202 in ZIP 92106 for August 2026, down 8.5% from a year earlier. There were 49 homes sold, and the typical home took 24 days, down from 35 a year earlier. Redfin's page description gave a different figure, so the median numbers are the ones I'd use. Point Loma sits next to Ocean Beach, and my Pacific Beach vs. Ocean Beach vs. Mission Beach comparison covers the beach side of town. For another close-in neighborhood, see my Hillcrest and Mission Hills guide. And before you buy, my guide to property taxes in San Diego and Prop 13 explains how your tax bill works.

My advice for San Diego buyers

  1. Visit on a weekday and a weekend to see traffic and parking.
  2. Ask about the age of the roof, sewer line and electrical panel on older homes.
  3. Check for aircraft noise by standing outside at different times of day.
  4. Look at recent sales within a few blocks, since a ZIP code median blends many kinds of homes.
