Clairemont 92117 Neighborhood Guide: History, Food and Things to Do

by Trevor Landress

Clairemont is the kind of neighborhood where you find the good stuff by driving the main streets slowly. There are canyon trails, a golf course designed by two famous names, and a mix of locally run restaurants strung along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Here's a local-style guide to the history, the food and the things to do, plus a short real estate section at the end.

The short answer

  • Tecolote Canyon Natural Park covers about 900 acres and is one of San Diego's oldest designated open-space parks.
  • Marian Bear Memorial Park is a 467-acre canyon park with about three miles of creekside paths.
  • Tecolote Canyon Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Sam Snead.
  • Redfin's median sale price for ZIP 92117 was $1,159,498 in August 2026.

A little history

Clairemont grew up fast after the war, and the San Diego Reader's archive of neighborhood stories gives a sense of what that felt like. One writer recalls moving to Clairemont in October 1959. Another story describes Ensign Albert Joseph Hickman, whose F3H Demon crashed into a Clairemont canyon on December 4, 1959. The article says he stayed with the aircraft to avoid crashing into Hawthorne Elementary.

The Reader also describes Tecolote Canyon Natural Park as 900 acres and one of the oldest designated open-space parks in San Diego, with rustic signs along some of the neighborhood's streets. That tells you something about how the area was laid out. The canyons were left alone, and the neighborhoods were built on the mesas between them.

Parks and trails

  • Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center at 5180 Tecolote Road is named after the owl and has about 6.5 miles of trails for hikers, runners and bikers.
  • Marian Bear Memorial Park at 5491 Genesee Avenue is 467 acres in San Clemente Canyon, with about three miles of creekside paths and steeper trails up to the mesa.
  • Olive Grove Park at 6075 Printwood Street has an olive grove, picnic tables, a playground and basketball courts.
  • Tecolote Canyon Golf Course at 2755 Snead Avenue is a 3,161-yard course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Sam Snead.

Where locals eat

San Diego Magazine's neighborhood guide, published in October 2023, covers a lot of ground along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Genesee Avenue.

  • Mike's Red Tacos at 4310 Genesee Avenue is a birria spot that started as a food truck.
  • Barrio Donas at 4714 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard is a bakehouse with Mexican-inspired donuts.
  • Havana Grill at 5450 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard is a Cuban restaurant known for plantains, lechón and yuca fries.
  • Aladdin Cafe at 5420 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard is a casual Mediterranean spot.
  • Yakitori Taisho at 5185 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard serves yakitori and sake, and reservations are recommended.
  • The Butcher N Cheese at 4705 Clairemont Drive is a craft burger and local beer spot.
  • Homestyle Hawaiian at 7524 Mesa College Drive serves large Hawaiian comfort-food plates, and its macadamia nut pancakes often sell out early.

The San Diego Reader also describes Best Donuts Deli, with a display case full of Mexican pastries. If you want a doughnut and a pastry run, I'd do Barrio Donas and Best Donuts Deli back to back. Since the magazine guide is from 2023, check each place's hours before you drive over.

Shops worth a stop

San Diego Magazine highlights Comickaze, a comic and manga shop on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard that had been open more than 20 years when the guide ran. It also lists Balboa International Market at 5905 Balboa Avenue for Mediterranean groceries, and Bridge Thrift at 4220 Balboa Avenue, which donates all its profits to local organizations. For a morning stop, The Fruit Stand at 4330 Morena Boulevard sells local and organic produce.

A little real estate

Redfin reported a median sale price of $1,159,498 in ZIP 92117 for August 2026, up 12.7% from a year earlier, and homes sold in a median of 15 days. I explain the numbers, the trolley stations and the City's community plan update in my Clairemont housing market post. If you're comparing Clairemont with its coastal neighbor, see my Pacific Beach market post and my Pacific Beach guide.

My advice for San Diego buyers

  1. Spend a Saturday here and eat at two or three of the spots above before you decide.
  2. Many Clairemont homes are older, so ask about the roof, plumbing, electrical and sewer line.
  3. If a home backs up to a canyon, ask about drainage and slopes.
  4. Look at recent sales within a few blocks, since a ZIP code median blends many kinds of homes.
