THE NAVAL TRAINING STATION

In 1923, the U.S. Navy established the Naval Training Center San Diego on the northern edge of Point Loma. Designed to prepare recruits for military service, the base trained hundreds of thousands of sailors, particularly during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Spanish Colonial Revival-style architecture, designed by architect Bertram Goodhue, gave the base a distinctive character that still defines Liberty Station today.

 

For decades, NTC San Diego remained a crucial training facility, shaping generations of naval personnel. However, with the military’s downsizing in the 1990s, the base was decommissioned in 1997, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this historic site.

TRANSFORMING INTO LIBERTY STATION

Following the decommissioning, the City of San Diego launched a redevelopment initiative, transforming the former naval base into Liberty Station—a thriving arts, dining, and retail district. The goal was to preserve the historic integrity of the site while repurposing its barracks, training buildings, and open spaces into something the public could enjoy. Today, Liberty Station is a shining example of adaptive reuse, where history meets modern vibrancy.
